Part of Your World by Abby Jimenez
A refreshingly modern fairy tale and instant New York Times bestseller that Love Hypothesis author Ali Hazelwood hai ls as "an uplifting, feel-good, romantic read." After a wild bet, gourmet grilled-cheese sandwich, and cuddle with a baby goat, Alexis Montgomery has had her world turned upside down. The cause: Daniel Grant, a ridiculously hot carpenter who’s ten years younger than her and as casual as they come—the complete opposite of sophisticated city-girl Alexis. And yet their chemistry is undeniable. While her ultra-wealthy parents want her to carry on the family legacy of world-renowned surgeons, Alexis doesn’t need glory or fame. She’s fine with being a “mere” ER doctor. And every minute she spends with Daniel and the tight-knit town where he lives, she’s discovering just what’s really important. Yet letting their relationship become anything more than a short-term fling would mean turning her back on her family and giving up the opportunity to help thousands of people. Bringing Daniel into her world is impossible, and yet she can’t just give up the joy she’s found with him either. With so many differences between them, how can Alexis possibly choose between her world and his? "Abby Jimenez’s words are like fairy dust... they sprinkled humor and warmth all over my life. Pick up Part of Your World if you’re looking for an uplifting, feel-good, romantic read—and for a beautiful reminder that we should always try to live the life that makes us the happiest." --Ali Hazelwood, New York Times bestselling author of The Love Hypothesis Read more
I had such high hopes for this book. I read The friend zone, The happy ever after playlist and Life’s too short and I loved them all! I was so impressed with Abby Jimenez’s writing. I loved all the characters and I laughed a lot. Those books were the story. They existed without any kind of virtue signaling and it was so refreshing. They were heavy subjects, but I didn’t struggle to get thru the books. This one was not at all like those. First of all, Alexis annoyed me so badly. She was a doctor… she worked hard for her career… driven and smart… but somehow she doesn’t see it and can’t make decisions that would make herself happy. It got so tedious. I know there was the element of mental abuse, but she was working through all of that in therapy and she could recognize it enough to leave her boyfriend…but she still felt beholden to her family and what they wanted for her and couldn’t see the abuse there. Second, there was way too much virtue signaling. Right off the bat there was the bashing of white men. It wasn’t necessary. Maybe if she had mentioned how difficult it was for a woman to work and thrive in a male dominated field, or if it had been written how the elite and super privileged were out of touch with reality, then ok. But it felt like she was very specifically targeting and blaming white men for the issues in this book all while dropping names like Melinda Gates and paying homage to Barack Obama… it was actually laughable. Third, there is Daniel. Another character who doesn’t know his worth. Who chases Alexis like a puppy dog. Who doesn’t think he can sell his one of a kind woodworking items for any substantial amount because it just never occurred to him before. The whole story felt somber and kind of preachy. There wasn’t great chemistry between the leads and the virtue signaling killed it. I just wasn’t impressed.
